April 22, 2024, Baytown, TX: ArcelorMittal Global R&D and ArcelorMittal (MT) North America along with their pipe manufacturing customer, Jindal Pipe USA, Inc., announce success in meeting the current requirements for hydrogen transportation in line pipe manufactured from coils produced at ArcelorMittal’s AM/NS Calvert joint venture. Pipe will therefore be available for future hydrogen transportation requirements, including the seven hubs selected for funding by U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Jindal Pipe USA, Inc. manufactured high frequency electric resistance welded (HFERW) pipe using steel from ArcelorMittal, meeting the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) stringent requirements at its Baytown, TX facility. Test samples were removed from the finished pipe and tested in accordance with the current American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards. Results from test environments using hydrogen at different pressures, air, and carbon dioxide contaminated with hydrogen, easily exceeded the requirements of the standard. Testing was conducted at DNV, Columbus, OH under the guidance of ExxonMobil.
This pipe has been proven to meet the specified requirements for both 100% hydrogen at high pressure and carbon dioxide lines with hydrogen contamination in the gas stream. ArcelorMittal and Jindal see the need for proven line pipe to satisfy the evolving demand for both hydrogen and carbon dioxide pipelines as the global energy transition continues to progress. Testing of additional pipe in different outside diameters, wall thicknesses and grade combinations will be required for qualification; however, the test results clearly demonstrate the suitability of the steel chemistry and processing parameters for both steel and pipe manufacturing.
“Additionally, the test results for carbon dioxide gas contaminated with hydrogen support their potential use in CO2 pipelines required for the CC(U)S infrastructure,” states Dr. Murali Manohar, Program Director - Energy & Emerging Markets, ArcelorMittal Global R&D.
This follows ArcelorMittal’s European facilities’ previously announced success enabling global supply of steel capable of handling hydrogen in pipelines, thus demonstrating ArcelorMittal’s readiness, together with their pipe mill customers, to be a leading supplier of steel to the hydrogen pipeline infrastructure. ArcelorMittal Global R&D will continue to provide leadership in worldwide efforts to achieve net-zero by 2050.
